8th Annual Spring Tournament

The following is our revised schedule of events for the tournament on Sunday, May 7th:
8:30am - 9:15am - white belts - all divisions
9:15am - 10:00am - orange belts - all divisions
10:00am - 11:15am - yellow belts - all divisions
11:15am - 12:30pm - green belts - all divisions
12:30pm - 3:00pm - purple & blue belts - all divisions
3:00pm - 5:00pm - brown & red belts - all divisions
*Times listed above are approximated. We will do our best to run on time but there is always a chance that we may run late so please be flexible and plan your day accordingly*
The karate tournament will take place on Sunday, May 7th from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Silver Spring International Middle School in the GYM - located at 313 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910. This competition is restricted to only Kaizen Karate students. ALL belt levels are allowed to compete - white, orange, yellow, green, purple, blue, brown, and red belts. Students will be grouped based on age & belt rank. The tournament will consist of four areas: (1) Ironman / Ironwoman - fitness competition based on push-ups, sit-ups and snap kicks (white - green belt) and push-ups, sit-ups and burpees (purple and up) (2) Master Form - kata competition - must be purple belt or higher to compete (3) Sparring (Point Fighting) (4) Board Breaking - must be yellow belt or higher to compete in this competition. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in all competitions.
Registration runs from April 1st - April 30th.
***PRE- REGISTRATION ONLY. REGISTRATION CLOSES ON APRIL 30th @ 11:59pm - NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS.***
START TIMES – Registration closes on Sunday, April 30th @ 11:59pm. At this time, we will create divisions based on age & belt rank for the sparring competition. Parents will be emailed a full detailed schedule of expected start times by Wednesday, May 3rd. Please keep in mind that we will schedule beginner level students (white, orange, yellow, and green belts) in the first part of the day before 12pm. Purple belts and higher can expect to start after 11:00am on the day of the event.
*All competitors must have a waiver signed by a parent / guardian on the day of the tournament at the registration desk before entering the tournament.
There is no spectator fee. Friends are welcome to watch.
Although participation is optional, it is strongly recommended that each student participate. A strong participation by students will make the event more competitive and fun. Please remember that competition is healthy when approached in the right manner. This tournament is designed to help students set goals, learn to participate and practice good sportsmanship skills.
(1) Ironman / Ironwoman: white belt - green belt will compete in sit-ups, push-ups, and snap kicks. 1min will be given for each part of the competition for a total of 3min per competitor. Total points wins. Purple belt and up will compete in sit-ups, push-ups, and burpees. All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.
(2) Kata: scores will range from 6-10 with judges giving scores based on belt level, age, and complexity of the kata performed. Both the presentation of the kata and the kata itself are scored as one. Only Master Form will be judged. Any other katas / forms will not be scored at the tournament. All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.
(3) Sparring: No contact to the face. Light touch to the head guard and body is permitted. No striking below the belt or at the neck, throat or back. Points are awarded for well-controlled moves at the face, chest, stomach and ribs. Each match lasts a full two minutes with total points determining the winner OR first person to 5 points. Single elimination. Students are matched by age and belt level. Two warnings for facial contact or excessive contact is automatic disqualification for the striker. All fighting participants must wear the completed set of protective equipment (head, hands, foot, mouth and cup for male participants). All belt levels are allowed to compete in this division.
(4) Board Breaking (also called tamishiwari competition): yellow belts and higher only are allowed to compete. Competitors decide the size of the board they wish to break - 4", 6", or 12" inch boards at the time of online registration. Students also decide the strike to break the board and will be given 3 boards to break. Judges will determine the winner based on creativity and difficulty of break. Competitors will only get two attempts and partial breaks will be scored and may not be retried. Yellow belts and higher only are allowed to compete.
Judging: Red and Black belts ONLY are allowed to judge at the tournament. Mandatory judging meeting will be held at 8:00am on the day of the tournament @ Silver Spring International Middle School in the GYM located at 313 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
